QR code formats

What can you put in a QR code?

A QR code can contain much more than a website address. Qrved creates static QR codes for common types of information that phones and other QR readers can understand directly.

Website URL

Open a website, landing page, document or other online destination.

Plain text

Encode instructions, serial numbers, notes or other text directly.

Email

Open a new email with an optional subject and pre-filled message.

Phone & SMS

Start a phone call or prepare an SMS message after scanning.

Contact card

Share a name, phone number and email as a digital V-Card.

WiFi network

Let visitors connect to a wireless network without manually typing credentials.

WhatsApp

Start a WhatsApp conversation with an optional pre-filled message.

Location & event

Encode geographic coordinates or calendar event information.

Static QR codes

A QR code that does not depend on Qrved.

A static QR code stores its destination or content inside the QR code itself. Once downloaded, the image does not need to contact Qrved when somebody scans it.

This makes static QR codes suitable for permanent website links, WiFi credentials, contact information, printed documents, labels and other information that does not need to change after printing.

  • No Qrved redirect is required when the code is scanned.
  • The downloaded PNG or SVG can be stored and printed independently.
  • The destination cannot be changed after the static QR code has been printed.
QR code vs. barcode

What is the difference?

QR codes and traditional barcodes both represent machine-readable data, but they are designed for different kinds of information.

QR codes

Two-dimensional

QR codes use a square matrix of modules and can contain substantially more information than traditional one-dimensional barcodes.

  • Website links
  • Text and contact information
  • WiFi credentials
  • Email and phone actions
  • Readable by most modern phone cameras

Barcodes

One-dimensional

Traditional barcodes use parallel bars and are commonly used for product identifiers, inventory, logistics and machine-readable labels.

  • Retail product numbers
  • Inventory identifiers
  • Warehouse labels
  • CODE 128, EAN, UPC and more
  • Designed for fast scanner recognition

How it works

How to create a QR code

Qrved generates the code directly from the information you enter and lets you download the finished result for digital or printed use.

  1. 1

    Choose the QR code type

Select a URL, text, WiFi network, contact card, email, phone number or another supported format.

  2. 2

    Enter your information

Fill in the destination or data that should be encoded in the QR code.

  3. 3

    Customize the design

Adjust colors, QR module shapes, corner styles, background and optional logo.

  4. 4

    Download and test

Export PNG or SVG and scan the final file with a phone before printing it in quantity.

Reliable scanning

Make QR codes that are easy to scan.

A customized QR code still needs enough contrast, empty space around its edges and enough visible QR modules for a scanner to recognize it reliably.

Use contrast Dark QR modules on a light background are usually the safest choice.
Keep a quiet zone Leave clear space around all four sides of the QR code.
Keep logos small A large logo can obscure too much of the encoded QR pattern.
Test before printing Scan the final exported code on more than one device when possible.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions about QR codes

A QR code is a two-dimensional machine-readable code that can store information such as a website URL, text, contact details, WiFi credentials or other structured data. Modern smartphones can usually read QR codes directly with the camera.

The current Qrved static QR code generator can be used without creating an account. You can customize a QR code and download the result as PNG or SVG.

Static QR codes created with the current generator encode their content directly and do not require Qrved to remain online. Existing Qrved-hosted dynamic QR codes are different because they rely on a Qrved redirect.

Yes. The Qrved generator supports a selection of built-in logos as well as custom image uploads. Keep the logo reasonably small and test the finished QR code before printing.

Yes. The Qrved QR scanner can read a QR code using your device camera or from an uploaded image. The decoded result is displayed before you choose whether to open it.

Qrved supports common one-dimensional barcode standards including CODE 128, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, CODE 39 and ITF.
